Ronnie O'Sullivan won his Maplin UK Championship semi-final with Mark Selby 9-8 in magnificent fashion with a 147 break in the deciding frame.
It was the perfect finish to the match for the Rocket as he equalled Stephen Hendry’s career record of eight maximum breaks. All of O’Sullivan’s have been in ranking events.
O’Sullivan had struggled to find his best form up to that point, but his glorious climax send the Telford International Centre crowd into rapture, and earned him a best-of-17 final against Stephen Maguire tomorrow.
Chigwell’s 32-year-old O’Sullivan made a maximum in the Northern Ireland Trophy last month and thus becomes only the second player, after John Higgins, ever to make 147s in consecutive ranking tournaments.
Tonight’s maximum, which earns O’Sullivan a Ј30,000 bonus providing it’s not equalled, is the 60th in snooker history, 37th in a ranking event and fourth of the season.
O’Sullivan has not won a ranking title in 33 months but has a chance to end that drought tomorrow if he can win his fourth UK title. The winner of his clash with Maguire will also take top spot in the provisional rankings.
Leicester’s Selby led 5-3 after the first session and extended his lead in the first frame tonight with a break of 42.
O’Sullivan fought back to 6-5 with 75 and 76 before Selby won frame 12 with a 65. In the 13th, Crucible runner-up Selby led 30-12 when he failed to judge a cannon in potting a red. O’Sullivan capitalised superbly with a 78.
He dominated the next to draw level at 7-7, then took the lead for the first time with a 63 after Selby had missed a simple red on 28.
Selby bravely fought back to 8-8 with a 60. But when he failed on a long red early in the decider, his chance was gone.
O’Sullivan potted the red, converted an excellent risky thin cut on the black to a centre pocket, and from there never looked like missing, as 14 more reds and blacks and all the colours found their targets.
"It was nice to give the crowd something to cheer about at the end," said O’Sullivan. "This is a great venue and a great tournament but my snooker tonight was not great, it was so poor. I played 16 poor frames but everyone now will be talking about the 147 so I feel like I’ve cheated, or taken a short cut. I’d rather have won 9-3, playing solid and not making any unforced errors.
"The first black in the 147 was a blind shot but it wasn’t as hard as it looked. It was 8-8 and I felt like I wanted to get something out of the game, to go out in a blaze of glory. Once I got to 40 I decided to go for it, and I felt a few butterflies which was good.
"It’s nice to get to eight 147s, I’d like to get to double figures, maybe get one at the Masters and at Sheffield and make four this season.
"Mark had the upper hand for most of the match, he’s a tough competitor, you don’t get to a world final otherwise. At 6-3 I was losing it, really struggling. There was no fluency, no power or finesse in my shots. I was a foot out on some of my positional shots."
As for the match with Maguire, O’Sullivan added: "Stephen said in an interview that he’s been watching me and noticed I’m giving away chances. He’s right, and only a few people would recognise that. I’ve been playing quickly and scoring ok, which has camouflaged the fact that I’m making a lot of mistakes. The bookmakers will make me favourite for tomorrow but I’d make Stephen favourite. If I play like I did today I’ll get beaten because Stephen is a winner."
Selby said: "It was a brilliant end to the match. I’ve had a good week and I wouldn’t change anything. At 7-5 I had a good chance in the balls and after that it seemed to change."
